Team-Based Learning Course Redesign Program
This page is intended to collect information in support of your request to participate in the Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute, which takes place August 15 and 17, 2017.

A limited number of seats are available for guests (i.e., higher education teachers not currently on the faculty or teaching staff of Vancouver Island University). Guest fees are $375 (CAD), which cover a two-day workshop (8:30 AM - 3:30 PM) including a light breakfast + lunch, consultations with veteran TBL practitioners, and a copy of Getting Started with Team-Based Learning (Sibley and Ostafichuk).

Facilitators: Tine Reimers, Bill Roberson, and Marilyn Funk, Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Specialists, Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning, VIU.

The Team-Based Learning Institute is an opportunity for faculty members to develop one of their courses using the Team-Based Learning (TBL) model conceived by organizational psychologist Larry K. Michaelsen. The TBL design model proposes a set of specific instructional protocols and practices that actively promote student ownership of their learning, as well as a sense of responsibility to the community that is created in the classroom.

  • Before August 15: Advance Preparation Time (complete a selection of readings)
  • Tuesday, August 15: Day One of Institute (Face to face), 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Wednesday, August 16: Day Two: Independent course development work (3-4 hours in a location of your choice)
  • Thursday, August 17: Day Three of Institute (Face to face), 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

See for More Details about the Program.

To get started, please provide us with a little information about yourself, and about your teaching. This may take 10 minutes.
*Since this will be a cohort-based project structured around participant interactions that replicate a student's complete experience in a TBL environment, we ask applicants to commit to being present for both full days (8:30AM - 3:30 PM) of the TBL immersion workshop. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided both days.

If you are aware of conflicts that might interfere with your full attendance over the two days, we ask that you postpone your participation to a later offering of this Institute (December, 2017 will be the next offering).

Please provide us with a few insights into your teaching by responding to the following questions. The facilitators will take into account your responses in their planning of the program. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Which of the following comes closest to representing your previous experience with the use of cooperative or collaborative learning as an instructional strategy?

What are some innovations that you have tried in the past (e.g., something you did to increase student engagement with the material)? What was your experience with those?
*Please describe in 100 words or fewer your goals and expectations for participating in this Course Redesign Program. What changes do you want/expect/hope to see in your students as a result of redesigning your course?

After you have submitted this last response, click "Submit". You should receive confirmation on the next page that your application has been successfully submitted.
